Akyol, Ender | 2022 | Makale | İngilizce | Political socialization experiences of Turkish citizen university students of Syrian origin | INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF INTERCULTURAL RELATIONS | 10.1016/j.ijintrel.2022.02.002 | 87 | 142-156 | Sometime after the anti-regime demonstrations began in Syria in March 2011, there was a huge wave of migration to neighboring countries, including Turkey. Some of these fled youth who were forced to emigrate from Syria came to Turkey and later became university students and acquired Turkish citizenship. This qualitative study focuses on the process of political socialization and political resocialization of the university students who came to Turkey as refugees from Syria and are now Turkish citizens. In this context, semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 16 university students living in Malatya and Gaziantep, Turkey, who have acquired Turkish citizenship. As a result of the thematic analysis of the qualitative data, the experiences of these students were listed under three main themes: political engagement, political participation, and citizenship.
Ural, Haktan; Can-Mollaer, Esra; Okan, Cansu | 2022 | Makale | İngilizce | Media representations of young people during pandemic times in Turkey | JOURNAL OF YOUTH STUDIES | 10.1080/13676261.2022.2039601 | This study discusses patterns of media representations of Turkish youth during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially, during the early lockdowns. We focus on media narratives as discursive practices, with the pandemic being the main object of these narratives. Building upon a thematic analysis of mainstream news media, we suggest that discursive representations portray young people along the axis of responsibilities and vulnerabilities. Along this axis, there lie three types of representations: (i) responsibilization of youth to deal with the health crisis, (ii) socio-economic vulnerabilities, and (iii) socio-cultural impoverishment. Viewing through this lens, we argue that representations of youth in news media during pandemic times maintain the recurrent figures of the youth that are conceived through the terms of the 'myth of youth' and 'denied citizenship' at the same time. To the extent that young people are recognized and praised as instrumental figures of crisis management, their vulnerabilities are partially or completely disregarded. Thus, youth in pandemic times emerges as a figure that is both instrumentalized and obscured.
Ozbay, Cenk; Erol, Maral; Bagci, Cigdem; Ozkaplan, Nurcan | 2022 | Makale | İngilizce | Secular but conservative? Youth, gender, and intimacy in Turkey | TURKISH STUDIES | 10.1080/14683849.2022.2085095 | This article contributes to studies on youth in Turkey by exploring gender, sexuality, intimacy, and relationship practices among college students. Our findings show that there is change (a) towards greater gender equality; (b) about attitudes regarding family, sexuality, and romance; and (c) in understanding and experiencing gendered violence in the groups of students we examined. Progressive values appear to become more common among the participants despite the increasingly conservative tone of the political and cultural climate. However, traditional relationship patterns and norms, including the idealization of monogamous relationships, robust familial ties, and sensitivity for moral reputation, seem prevalent even though these were not associated with the ascendant politico-religious conservatism. By constituting 'secular but conservative' intimate selves and relations, our respondents approve the freedom and right to explore possibilities for others, and yet not immediately for themselves, as they preserve an unequivocal moral self.
Gokce-Kizilkaya, Suna; Onursal-Besgul, Ozge | 2017 | Makale | İngilizce | Youth participation in local politics: city councils and youth assemblies in Turkey | Southeast European and Black Sea Studies | 10.1080/14683857.2016.1244239 | 17(1) | 97-112 | The focus of this study is political participation of youth in local politics in Turkey. Since local politics includes elements from both macro politics and mundane affairs, it proves to be a fertile ground to analyse how youth experience politics. Youth participation in local politics became an important issue in Turkey with the Agenda 21. The Agenda 21 that was launched with the UN Rio Summit was transferred to Turkey in the form of Local Agenda 21 leading to the establishment of city councils and youth assemblies under the umbrella of the councils. We treat city councils and youth assemblies as a lost opportunity' for now, and we ask why the youth cannot be integrated into local politics, despite the fact that they are willing to participate. Based on the interviews conducted with the members of assemblies, we try to understand the factors that lead to young people's engagement in political life.

In particular, we concentrate on the emergence of different strategies regarding civic and political participation in Turkey, by looking at their relationship with civic and political engagement. The scope is to focus on the influence that various factors have in determining patterns of participation. The research and relative results are based on the narratives inherent to two opposite scenarios - that we defined constraints to engagement and participation and patterns of emancipation - that emerged during the interviews with youth activists of NGOs in Turkey.

We use a political psychology model that highlights the impact of civic engagement, political sophistication, and values on conventional and unconventional participation. We argue that these factors will be significant predictors of unconventional participation setting it apart from conventional political behaviour, which will be driven by simpler considerations. We expect these qualitative differences in the drivers of conventional and unconventional participation to go beyond age and gender differences and highlight the complexity of political decision-making in Turkey's electoral authoritarian system. We use the 2012 World Value Survey to test our hypotheses, with a nationally representative sample of Turkish citizens. We find significant variations in the role of values, sophistication and levels of civic engagement for conventional and unconventional participation when controlling for age, gender and left-right ideological orientations. Our findings confirm the complex considerations that drive citizens' engagement with politics and can be useful to explaining recent political developments in Turkey involving youth, public mobilization and protests, but also mainstream voting choices.
Bee, Cristiano; Chrona, Stavroula | 2017 | Makale | İngilizce | Youth activists and occupygezi: patterns of social change in public policy and in civic and political activism in Turkey | Turkish Studies | 10.1080/14683849.2016.1271722 | 18(1) | 157-181 | The research puzzle that our paper focuses on is the struggle of youth organizations to have their voice heard in public policy processes. We examine the implications of occupygezi in establishing, or not, a new relationship with the political domain and policy makers in Turkey. By drawing on a policy analysis framework, this paper looks at whether occupygezi opened up new windows of opportunities for social and political change for youth activists in Turkey. In doing so, we rely upon the results of a number of in-depth interviews conducted in 2015/16 in Turkey with representatives of youth organizations.
Bee, Cristiano; Kaya, Ayhan | 2017 | Makale | İngilizce | Determinants of young people's civic and political participation in Turkey | Southeast European and Black Sea Studies | 10.1080/14683857.2017.1279256 | 17(1) | 35-39 | This special section provides a timely reflection on current debates that are of extreme relevance in order to gain a better understanding of the concepts of citizenship and active citizenship in Turkey, by looking at the determinants of civic and political participation, at the patterns of political and civic mobilization and at the orientations of political behaviour. Its originality stands on the specific focus on young people in comparison to other age groups. The different papers remark upon the importance that the reframing of the notions of citizenship and active citizenship have in the Turkish context along with the determinants that make this remark more relevant than ever.
Gokariksel, Banu; Secor, Anna J. | 2017 | Makale | İngilizce | Devout Muslim masculinities: the moral geographies and everyday practices of being men in Turkey | Gender, Place and Culture | 10.1080/0966369X.2017.1314948 | 24(3) | 381-402 | While the academic focus on Muslim women's dress and comportment has enriched our understanding of the multifaceted formation of pious femininities, there has been much less consideration of the embodied practices of Muslim men. What work does exist on Middle Eastern men's piety, sexuality, and everyday conduct too often falls back on established categories, such as traditional, Western, or Islamic identities. Yet it is crucial not only to critically examine how we conceptualize masculinity in the Middle East, but also to recognize the political and cultural importance of how masculinities are enacted through everyday practices. In this article, we argue that questions of dress and bodily practice are relevant to an understanding of how young devout Muslim men navigate the complex spatiality of piety, morality, and masculinity in contemporary urban Turkey. Drawing on fieldwork with young devout men in Konya and Istanbul, we illustrate how multiple, competing devout Muslim masculinities participate in the production of uneven moral geographies in these two very different Turkish cities. Further, we find that the possibility of different ways to enact devout masculinity opens questions about the universality of Islamic knowledge and practice. We suggest that the embodied construction and regulation of the looking-desiring nexus tethers male sexual desire to the public performance of Islamic morality. Our intervention is thus to demonstrate how different versions of masculinity and Islamic piety striate the moral geographies of these two Turkish cities, and thereby to further recognition of the contingency and plurality of both masculinity and Islam.
Kayaoglu, Aysegul | 2017 | Makale | İngilizce | Voting Behavior of the Youth in Turkey: What Drives Involvement in or Causes Alienation from Conventional Political Participation? | Turkish Studies | 10.1080/14683849.2016.1273776 | 18(1) | 32-55 | The decline of conventional political participation of the youth is a serious concern in many countries worldwide. Studying the Turkish example, this paper aims to empirically analyze the determinants of youngsters' (non)voting behavior. The analysis shows that lifestyle is the most important factor, reflecting the importance of the youth's everyday practices on their conventional political participation. Besides, being female, having higher levels of education and residing in an urban area increase the probability of abstaining. Moreover, economic voting' exists for youngsters as they are found to be punishing the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) for economic prospects unpromising either individually or societally. For first-time voters, lifestyle and the 2013 Gezi protests are the main determinants of voting behavior. Furthermore, there is persistence in abstaining from voting as having abstained in the 2011 general elections increases the probability of abstaining again by 18 percent. The analysis of disillusioned youth demonstrates that Gezi protests have increased the probability of their conventional political participation; they can be associated either with a decline in their probability of voting for the AKP, or of being indecisive and/or abstaining. A factor change analysis, however, finds that the abstained and indecisive Kurdish youth's preferences have shifted towards pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party post-Gezi.
Evcili, Funda; Golbasi, Zehra | 2017 | Makale | İngilizce | Sexual Myths and Sexual Health Knowledge Levels of Turkish University Students | Sexuality & Culture - An Interdisciplinary Journal | 10.1007/s12119-017-9436-8 | 21(4) | 976-990 | This research was conducted to determine sexual myths and sexual health knowledge levels of Turkish university students. The research is descriptive research. It was performed between 8 and 12 February 2015 in a state university in Turkey. The study sample consisted of 1379 students. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form, Sexual Myths Scale (SMS) and Sexual Health Knowledge Test (SHKT). Data were analyzed in the SPSS program. The mean age of students was 21.7 +/- 1.27 years. Their first sources for obtaining information about sexuality related issues were as follows: peer/friends (59.1%), internet (42.5%), written materials (31.5%). SMS mean score of the students was 82.21 +/- 17.37. SHKT mean score of the students was 19.94 +/- 6.16. The SMS mean score of the male students was higher than that of the female students. The students living in urban areas had a lower SMS mean score and a higher SHKT mean score than did the students living in the rural areas. The students having well-educated mothers had a lower SMS mean score and a higher SHKT mean score than did the students with low-educated mothers (p < 0.05). There was a statistically significant negative correlation between SMS and SHKT. It is recommended that school-based education programs should be extended and that the peer education model should be integrated into the existing education programs to reduce the number of sexual myths among young people at risk and to increase their sexual health information.
Erdogan, Emre; Uyan-Semerci, Pinar | 2017 | Makale | İngilizce | Understanding young citizens' political participation in Turkey: does being young' matter? | Southeast European and Black Sea Studies | 10.1080/14683857.2016.1235000 | 17(1) | 57-75 | Participation is key to the discussions of democracy and justice. For all citizens, no matter their differences, having the ability to participate is a difficult but required condition for a just and democratic political community. Based on the recent research on citizenship in Turkey, this article aims to explore, first, whether young citizens' political participation shows a different pattern when compared to the rest of the population and, second, whether being young still determines the outcome when controlled for demographical factors and economic status. We then question whether belonging to different collective identities plays a different role in the way young citizens participate, and how. Last, mostly focusing on young citizens' perceptions of the Gezi Park protests, the paper will discuss the role of politicized collective identities in the formation of conventional and unconventional political participation.
Enneli, H. Caglar; Enneli, Pinar | 2017 | Makale | İngilizce | Reinforcement and erosion of traditional gender roles among young people in a poor metropolitan area of Turkey | JOURNAL OF YOUTH STUDIES | 10.1080/13676261.2016.1217320 | 20(3) | 349-365 | This paper aims to contribute to the existing studies on the young women's transition to adulthood in the case of Turkish women's exclusion from the labour market. The issue is discussed largely within the boundaries of traditional gender restrictions that keep women out of employment. Herein, we argue that the gender-based control of young women, perceived as the reason for their exclusion from the labour market, may be used by disadvantaged women as a way of avoiding difficult and unfavourable employment situations. Similarly, the gender roles imposed on men could also not be fulfilled due to the same restrictive labour market conditions. Furthermore, we suggest that the poverty simultaneously strengthens and erodes the very base of the traditional gender structure for both young women and young men, while forcing the young women out of employment and the young men to the unstable working conditions. This argument is based on a study conducted in Altnda, Ankara with a sample of 279 females and 340 males aged between 15 and 24. A mixed methodology, comprising a survey questionnaire followed by 60 in-depth interviews and 4 focus group discussions, was employed for this study.

Çelik, Kezban & Lüküslü, Demet | 2018 | Makale | İngilizce | Unemployment as a chronic problem facing young people in Turkey | Research and Policy on Turkey | 10.1080/23760818.2018.1517449 | 3(2) | 155-172 | The International Labour Organization (ILO) has warned of young workers facing a dangerous mix of high unemployment, increased inactivity and precarious work in developed countries, as well as persistently high working poverty in the developing world. Living in a developing country, Turkey’s young population experiences similar problems with unemployment and the transition to the labour market. Officially unemployment stood at nearly 11% in the first quarter of 2018 and the rate of youth unemployment was higher than twice the average of OECD countries – although the number of young people in higher education skyrocketed. However, the present troubles of Turkey’s youth in the labour market leave many of them questioning the meaning of acquiring an education, as well as the efficiency of the education system itself. It is common knowledge that higher education graduates in the 20–24 age group are more likely to be unemployed than adults who have lesser qualifications and young women are affected worst. Any effort to address the issue will need to draw on our understanding of various factors like labour market structure, demography, gender, and migration dynamics underlying unemployment and labour relations in Turkey today. This article evaluates these factors with a view to assessing their impact on the young generation of Turkey and shed light on youth unemployment and labour issues in the country.
Burke, Barbara Ruth; Sen, Ayse Fulya | 2018 | Makale | İngilizce | Social media choices and uses: comparing Turkish and American young-adults' social media activism | PALGRAVE COMMUNICATIONS | 10.1057/s41599-018-0090-z | 4 | Advocates of new media-especially social networks, blogs, and photo/content sharing sites-argue that these tools create transformative impacts on society. Recently, around the world younger activists in popular democracy movements, uprisings, and protests, feeling disengaged by traditional forms of political discourse, have debated their positions on new media, and have used digital media to communicate, organize, and coordinate protest activities. While some media scholars suggest this is an indication that young people are active in creating a public sphere constructed by social media, there is still little real-world evidence that the technological potentials are widely realized. To address this gap, this comparative case study aims to reveal how some ordinary young people are using social media in response to political issues, investigating: if social media create a new kind of dynamic arena for their public activism; which factors may stimulate the young to activism; and whether their motivation is powerful enough to resist the status quo. Describing and analyzing qualitative interview data from a study of Turkish students and a parallel collection of data from US students, we construct an explanation of their communicated understandings of their differences and similarities in opportunities for political actions. Our findings indicate: there are many similar technical capacities; some similar topics are seen as political; and there are different understandings of what is and is not for public discussion among their personal collections of contacts and friends, with varying levels of real-world connections. This analysis is important in terms of understanding the ways uses of media technologies may be affected by different cultures, political and social conceptualizations and online communication patterns.

Taking this as its starting point, this article discusses what the politicization of youth could mean for democracy and democratization in Turkey. This is important because, especially since 2011, Turkish politics has been dominated by debates concerning authoritarianization. Focusing on the largest student organization in Turkey, the Student Collectives (SC), this article shows that the relationship between politicization and democratization is more complicated than at first sight. Some aspects of the student movement in Turkey suggest it is an important moment of democratization in Turkey while other aspects arouse scepticism. Three crucial indicators of a movement’s democratic potential are whether it attends to deciphering the existing constellation of power relations, reflects on the possibility of installing a counter-hegemony and gives importance to collective identities. However, the SC’s potential democratic contribution is weakened by its conceptualization of democratic struggle in terms of antagonism rather than agonism through ‘moralizing’ politics. Moreover, its reluctance to engage with institutions of representative democracy further complicates the matter. The main contribution of this study is its discussion of various forms of politicization and their possible effects on democratization; and to give some clues to the activists of different social movements that can be helpful in their self-reflection.

Using a critical discourse analysis, based on Norman Fairclough's work (2012), the aim is to analyse the discourses used within policy-related documents regarding social inclusion, youth, and sport. In order to achieve this objective, we analysed 15 key documents, including annual activity reports, national youth and sport policy documents, and strategic plans produced by the Ministry. Findings revealed that the dominant discourses about young people seem to be embedded within neoliberal and neoconservative ideologies in which depoliticised notions of 'employment/apprenticeship' and 'the family' are put forward as solutions for the social inclusion of young people. However, such a discourse risks further sustaining the social exclusion of youth, denying their full citizenship.

Three crucial indicators of a movement's democratic potential are whether it attends to deciphering the existing constellation of power relations, reflects on the possibility of installing a counter-hegemony and gives importance to collective identities. However, the SC's potential democratic contribution is weakened by its conceptualization of democratic struggle in terms of antagonism rather than agonism through 'moralizing' politics. Moreover, its reluctance to engage with institutions of representative democracy further complicates the matter. The main contribution of this study is its discussion of various forms of politicization and their possible effects on democratization; and to give some clues to the activists of different social movements that can be helpful in their self-reflection.
Tekkas Kerman, Kader; Betrus, Patricia | 2019 | Makale | İngilizce | What makes a man a real man?: Perspectives regarding masculinities and gender roles among young men in Turkey | ASIAN JOURNAL OF WOMENS STUDIES | 10.1080/12259276.2019.1682268 | 25(4) | 491-514 | Analyzing 5 focus group interviews with 46 college-going men (18-25 years), this qualitative study specifically explores perspectives of young Turkish men about meanings and conceptualizations of masculinities and gender roles. Our study finds that they viewed masculinity as demonstrating and maintaining superior, tough, self-sufficient, exteriors. Homosocial practices, including sexual objectification, competition, and homophobia, are important for the maintenance of male dominance and masculinity. Our respondents felt that men should avoid housework so as not to be identified as feminine or ridiculed by their families or peers. In this qualitative study, we illustrate how masculinities and gender roles are shaped among college-going young men with specific examples from the interviews. The study revealed that, societal pressure stemming from cultural traditions and Islam has a significant influence on these men's understanding of acceptable gender roles and masculinity. Based on these findings, we propose strategies to reformulate a healthy gender identity and to support young men at individual, community, and societal levels.
Bozok, Mehmet; Bozok, Nihan | 2019 | Makale | İngilizce | The household, the street and the labour market: masculinities and homosocial solidarity networks of Afghan migrant boys in a squatter neighbourhood in Istanbul | NORMA | 10.1080/18902138.2018.1519241 | 14(2) | 96-111 | This study focuses on how undocumented Afghan migrant boys construct homosocial solidarity networks in the absence of their families in a squatter neighbourhood in Istanbul, Turkey. Based on the findings of qualitative field research conducted in 2015, this study argues that the homosocial solidarity networks among young Afghan migrant boys are developed in three different spatial contexts: the household, the street and the labour market. These homosocial solidarity networks enable them to survive in a foreign country which is full of challenges. Being a part of those networks provides employment in a competitive labour market, as well as security. In that process, while trying to survive, young Afghan migrant boys engage in gender stretching in the household. At the same time, in spite of their fragility as undocumented young migrants in a foreign land, they develop stern-yet-fragile transnational migrant masculinities challenging local masculinities in the public sphere, at the cost of losing their childhood in an early age.

This policy has created an actual situation that proposes the placement of male students in the residences that are close to the center, and the female students in the student residences in locations that can be considered deserted and remote for women in Erzincan. The sample of this study is composed of 459 people, including both male and female students, who live in all Higher Education Student Loan and Housing Board (HESLHB) residences in the city. The surveys conducted on the sample form the data of the research. The data were analyzed with independent sample t-test and ANOVA test The findings show that the policy on the termination of mixed residences, which may be referred to as the gendering of space, creates gender inequity. The results of the study show that the visibility of female students in public-urban areas has been limited in line with conservative and patriarchal policies which delimits their right to the city. However, it shows that this results in the fact that male students are pushed into a more financially disadvantaged position.
Hakimi, Aziz A. | 2020 | Makale | İngilizce | Good men don't elope': Afghan migrant men's discourses on labour migration, marriage and masculinity | HISTORY AND ANTHROPOLOGY | 10.1080/02757206.2020.1865342 | This article explores the intersections between masculinity, migration and marital strategies through both a historical and ethnographic focus on the everyday lives of Turkmen men from Northern Afghanistan working in Turkey. While the economic rationales of migration (in response to war and poverty) have been studied previously, this is the first time the intertwined nature of the martial and migratory strategies of Afghan men have been examined in a diaspora context. This involves examining the connections between strategies of self-making as adult males through marriage and strategies of capital accumulation as migrant workers. Moreover, providing for one's family, rather than the desire for individual fulfilment, is a key signifier of a caring and loving man and one of the many ways in which men in Afghanistan assert and perform their masculinity. The argument presented in this article seeks to go beyond the notion that young Turkmen men from Afghanistan are merely conservative in their attitudes to marriage in terms of compliance to parental choice of partners. Rather, it seeks to highlight the importance of the maintenance of social networks that require the upholding of moral and material obligations towards familial and kin elders to the livelihood strategies of these men. This argument integrates Afghan men (and especially Turkmen men) into wider discussions of patriarchy and family life in globalizing contexts rather than simply treating them as an exception to broader socio-economic trends.

The case of Turkey | Journal of Youth Studies | 10.1080/13676261.2019.1683523 | 24(1) | 40-61 | Applying insights from research on civic and political participation, this study focuses on the effects that the recent authoritarian turn taken by Turkey had on the expression of participatory behaviours by young people. The analysis brings about a number of contentious issues and intertwines two recent dynamics. First of all recent events (such as the protests associated with the occupygezi movement) show that youth in Turkey are extremely important players and political actors. Secondly, however, the authoritarian turn taken by the country under the AKP’s governance resulted in serious and alarming limitations to the exercise of basic freedoms and hence participatory behaviours. Based on the results of 40 semi-structured interviews with young people involved in civil society organisations, the article discusses three aspects: young people’s views of active citizenship; the instruments of empowerment that stimulate participatory behaviours and the significance attributed to different means of civic and political participation. The analysis reveals the complexity of active citizenship in a context of heightened authoritarianism and underlines the constraints put on the exercise of civic and political participation by the current government. It also unpacks the alarming consequences of the AKP agenda on the expression of freedoms, with a particular focus on the repression of participatory behaviours.

Student Movements in Late Neoliberalism. | Palgrave Macmillan | 10.1007/978-3-030-75754-0_11 | 269-292 | At the turn of the millennium, multiple countries erupted in student protests against tuition hikes in public universities. Despite arising in varying political contexts, these protests followed remarkably similar paths to achieving concessions. In this chapter, I compare student protests against tuition hikes across three different welfare state types: Germany, Turkey, and the United States. I argue that the crucial commonality across these cases was the formation of unexpected alliances made possible by the failures of past movements. I offer a meso-level analysis of past “failures” that empowered strategic intentions through activists’ collective memory work. These positions offered new possibilities for brokerage, enabled and constrained different alliance configurations, especially with labor unions and civil society organizations. The legacy of the 1960s and the 1990s influenced the pathways available to the student activists in the 2000s.

It focuses on a seemingly mundane cultural practice of essay writing and student essay competitions to investigate the party’s message and methods in addressing young people. In particular, it examines the politics of history and emotional politics in the party's effort to construct and administer youth publics. The article argues that the AKP’s power is embedded in and reproduced by the articulation of political differences and mobilization of emotions, which play a significant role in the party’s broader bid to reorganize society, redefine collective identity, and control dissent.
Sahin, Ture | 2021 | Makale | İngilizce | Rethinking alternative youth identities in Izmir: 'Indifferently cool' manifestations | EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF CULTURAL STUDIES | 10.1177/1367549420919873 | 24(5) | 1143-1159 | This article discusses the self-identification and meaning-making processes of 'alternative' youth in Izmir, Turkey, by focusing on their own narratives and the microcosmos of their everyday life practices. The research argues that while alternative young individuals benefit from the global subcultural scene, particularly hipster subculture, they also create complex signifiers within their cultural environments to emphasise both individual subjectivities and shared 'alternative' group identities. The article claims that subcultures, with their styles, images and music that are consumed in imaginative ways, become productive and creative spheres of cultural production that are constantly at interplay with broader cultural forms in a given society. Hence, opening up a debate on youth subcultures has the potential to give salient clues about the transformations of society at large and its cultural values and beliefs. In this sense, the study formulates subcultures as offshoots - even forms of resistance - both drawing on and feeding mainstream cultural forms. The study is based on field research conducted among alternative youth in Izmir, Turkey - through participant observation, semi-structured interviews with youth groups and in-depth interviews with the owners and workers of the places where 'alternative' youth hang out. Since contemporary youth cultures in Turkey are a highly under-researched area, this article aims at mapping out a general framework towards a better understanding of the everyday practices and meaning worlds of alternative young people. It is hoped that this, in turn, will serve to pave the way for further research on youth subcultures in Turkey.

Based on qualitative fieldwork involving 78 interviews conducted between 2009 and 2011 in seven different cities, the research focuses on the boundaries of AKP identity concerning Alevis' democratic demands and different modes of reconciliation with these. The results show the issue of Alevi politico-religious rights to reveal the religious, institutional and national boundaries of AKP political identity. In addition, the demand for the construction of a museum to commemorate the 1993 Madimak Massacre in Sivas triggered the Sunni memory boundaries of young activists in that city. The AKP youth also presented some approaches that reconciled with Alevi demands, classified as pragmatic, political and subjective.

As designers, manufacturers, and retailers, these Muslim fashionistas not only gained the attention of youngMuslim women but also became lifestyle gurus, projecting images of the successful entrepreneur, the ideal mother, the benevolent philanthropist, and the leisure enthusiast. This combination of roles resonates with the notion of the ideal Muslim woman promoted by the government. But its performance entails moments of imperfection and moral dilemma, as the demands of capitalism and consumerism place Muslim fashionistas in opposition to the teachings of their faith and traditional gender regimes. Drawing on practice theory, and on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Istanbul, this article explores Muslim fashionistas' everyday performances in the fields of family, charity, and leisure. The objective is to analyze how these agents negotiate and interpret quotidian inconsistencies between their religious and social ideals and those ideals' manifestation.

Almost a century later, the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) attempts to re-model youth through a new ethno-religious nationalist project. This study argues that different from the secular Kemalist social engineering that dominated the state?s youth policy for decades, the AKP relies on the intermediary agency of Islamist-conservative and government-oriented civil society to shape young generations and convey ethno-religious nationalism to youth. Seventeen government-oriented youth organizations illustrate the extent of the Justice and Development Party?s (AKP) quest for a new national identity and cultural hegemony within the broader context of Turkey?s steady decline into an authoritarian regime. The findings?based on original fieldwork conducted between October 2017?June 2019?demonstrate youth organizations? country-wide grassroots engagement in four categories: indoctrination, extra-curricular training, service provision in the education sector, and street activism and humanitarian work. Their self-defined goals, ideological roots and grassroots reach inject a new disciplinary ethos and statist values in youth towards shaping them as Muslim and nationalist ?ideal citizens?. The study offers insights on the societal aspects of authoritarian regime building and cautions that crafting ?successful? authoritarian regimes is not a one-way process that takes place only at the formal institutional level. A broad range of societal players and coalitions, including civil society, play a critical role in authoritarian regime building.

Drawing on the relational work perspective from economic sociology and semi-structured interviews with the study's respondents (N:120), this article will be headed towards the reconsideration of social, economic, political and cultural constitutions of Turkish creative professionals' formation in the creative economies of Turkey. In contrast with the majority of existing studies on this topic, this study argues that, contemporary capitalism's impact on the creative professionals' formations is not the necessarily the same. Profound differences there exist. Especially, the cultural and economic constitutions of creative professionals' in any given states creative economies conditions. Therefore, my study would conclude that the impact of late capitalism on creative labour is not unidirectional at least not in Turkish labours case. Conversely, the post Fordist service economies provide some positive contributions to Turkish young creative labourers' subjectivities.

Drawing on policy documents and elite interviews, this article explores the role of civil society organizations in promoting civic and political organizations in traditionally marginal groups. The article is primarily concerned with unpacking dominant discourses, as produced by public documents and official statements by both civil society organizations and policy-makers. The analysis will produce an overview of their general discursive orientations and the related legal changes and policy implementations. The article then looks at the impact of these discursive formulations to the issue of participation. What is important to note is that action plans and strategies are not always implemented in a manner that is in keeping with the original intentions of policy-makers. The review of public and civil society documents highlights serious differences in focus and coverage between the groups. It also highlights limited engagement with the actual issues of civic and political participation. While youth participation is paid limited attention, women participation is mostly associated with political representation in national and local political bodies.

Özyeğin, Gül | 2015 | Kitap | İngilizce | New desires, new selves: Sex, love, and piety among Turkish youth | NYU Press | As Turkey pushes for its place in the global pecking order and embraces neoliberal capitalism, the nation has seen a period of unprecedented shifts in political, religious, and gender and sexual identities. This book shows how this social transformation in Turkey is felt most strongly among its young people, eager to surrender to the seduction of sexual modernity, but also longing to reman attached to traditional social relations, identities and histories. Engaging a wide array of upwardly-mobile young adults, Ozyegin links the biographies of individuals with the biography of a nation, revealing their creation of conflicted identities in a country which has existed uneasily between West and East, modern and traditional, and secular and Islamic. For these young people sexuality, gender expression, and intimate relationships in particular serve as key sites for reproducing and challenging patriarchy and paternalism that was hallmark of earlier generations. As the book evocatively shows, the quest for sexual freedom and an escape frpm patriarchal constructions of selfless femininity and protective masculinity promise both personal transformations and profound sexual guilt and anxiety. A poignant and original study, the book presents a snapshot of cultural change on the eve of rapid globalization in the Muslim world.

It centers on four young women, who have unequal access to economic resources and different cultural meanings. Through their biographies, this paper examines the effects of social class on experiences of gender and negotiations of femininity, on the one hand. And on the other, it demonstrates common narratives that young women employ in negotiating gender. While they commonly escape certain forms of femininity, which they frequently describe as traditional, backward, or submissive, they also employ alternative narratives such as independence, career success, moderation, chastity, and religiosity to attest self-value and respectability. Studying young women's experiences of gender and their negotiations of power provides fertile ground for further exploration of the construction of gender and class in relational terms.

Mortenson, Erik; Ergun, Duygu; Erdogan, Selen | 2015 | Makale | İngilizce | Underground literature and its influence on youth in Turkey | New Perspectives on Turkey | 10.1017/npt.2015.3 | 52 | 77-104 | This paper examines the impact underground literature (yeralti edebiyati) has on influencing the opinions and beliefs of Turkey's youth regarding issues of contemporary importance. In order to understand the relevance of this genre to Turkish youth culture, we have not only examined the debate surrounding the topic in popular and academic circles, but also asked the readers themselves their opinions about their experience with the genre (in both its imported Western and homegrown Turkish variants) and its relevance to their lives. For our purposes, the effect of such texts on readers is the primary focus, and ours is the first mixed-media study to conduct a methodological, data-based investigation into the composition and opinions of underground literature's readers. Thus, our study supplements a lack in the existing scholarship by offering concrete qualitative and quantitative data that will better elucidate our knowledge of the relationship between underground literature and Turkish youth attitudes, as well as the potential the genre might hold for the future of Turkey's youth.
Yigit, Ahu | 2015 | Makale | İngilizce | Those who laugh together, belong together: Online satire in Turkey | Turkish Policy Quarterly | 4 | 61-69 | Since the mass participation in the Gezi Park protests of 2013, youth activism in Turkey has not translated into party politics, nor has another similar wave of protests followed. However, the line of criticism directed against the government and its leaders during the protests is still present, and is particularly visible online. Besides more serious political criticism found online, certain satire websites, Facebook groups, and some so-called benign Twitter trolls have developed a critical, humorous voice of their own. This article is an analysis of the humor and youth activism displayed in these venues, placing both into the broader context of present-day Turkish politics.

This government period was marked by the emergence of a new myth of youth in Turkey: the myth of a pious generation, aimed at replacing the previous myth of a modern and national youth, prevalent in Turkey’s political culture since the nineteenth century and reinforced by the Kemalist Republic. The article first situates the education and youth policies of the AKP in the history of youth in Turkey and discusses the continuities and ruptures between the Kemalist and AKP youth projects. Secondly, through a critical reading of the political discourses of AKP leader Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and of specific youth and education policies of the government, the paper conceptualizes this newly emerging myth in the context of neoliberal economic and conservative social policies of the AKP government and its aim to control the future through reshaping the young.

However, no study has examined what this characterization means to young Turkish voters or whether it predicts their approach to morality. In Study 1, we investigated in two separate samples the relation between young Turkish participants' responses to the one-item left-to-right political orientation question and their self-reported political ideologies (conservative, socialist, etc.). In Study 2, we investigated the relation of moral dimensions as defined by Moral Foundations Theory to political party affiliation and political ideology. Results revealed that CHP, MHP, and AKP voters display a typical right-wing profile distinct from HDP voters. Findings regarding political ideology measures were consistent with party affiliations. Taken together, the findings reveal the distinctive nature of young Turkish people's political orientations while supporting the predictive power of the one-item political orientation question.
